Facebook Symbols and Smileys

Just as the Facebook website has become part of your daily lives, so have the Facebook chat emoticons (you know, the little icons you see in conversations all over the Internet!). Now the largest and most used social networking website, it is safe to say that these emoticons will be more used and recognised that those emoticons found elsewhere on the Internet even including heavyweights such as Skype and Yahoo! Messenger.
Even though many tools like MSN, Yahoo and Skype include lots of additional options for their chat programs, Facebook, like their website, have kept their chat software basic and clean on purpose. The additional bells and whistles are not what Facebook Chat is about. In fact it is just for chatting! While alternative tools put lots of emphasis on their extra services and features like icons, smileys and emoticons, They do exist however and can be found by using hidden shortcut keys to create various emoticon icons on the chat interface.
Like emoticons and smileys are an integral part of the user experience for the chat program and are here to stay. They are as important to Facebook chat as they ever have been for any similar tool and the widespread use of emoticons, smileys and icons in general on forums and blogs just goes to show their staying power is real.
Facebook provides all of the standard emoticons that have been around for years for example the original smiling face -:-) - or the winking face -;-) but the company have also added their own versions of objects and faces with their own set of shortcut keyboard keys. Users of the emoticons on Facebook have largely agreed that the keyboard shortcuts use symbols and characters that are easier to remember than similar emoticons on other websites and chat software, for example to draw a monkey means simply adding the sequence of:|]
More and more emoticons and icons are being implemented over time as their popularity has soared and Facebook have stated that support for all smileys, emoticons and icons will be continued in the future of Facebook chat which is good news for all that use it.
